Police charged a 23-year-old man with seriously injuring a 44-year-old woman in an attack at her Jarvis Street home on Sunday morning by a man who used a skateboard as a weapon.

Officers went to Kristin Chandler Byrd’s house about 7:50 a.m. and found her seriously injured, they said.

They also found Kevin Chou of 2204 Leadenhall Way at Byrd’s house and arrested him on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Chou was less seriously hurt and was treated at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh before being booked at the Wake County Detention Center. Police did not say how Chou was injured.

EMS took Byrd to WakeMed, but she later was transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, police said. They did not disclose how she was hurt or why she was moved.

Chou and Byrd knew each other, police said.

Dispatchers at 911 got a call from Byrd’s home, but the caller hung up before they could find out what was wrong. Police are dispatched to check on all hang-up calls, however, so they went to the million-dollar home at the corner of Jarvis and Iredell streets, just east of St. Mary’s Street.

Chou was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail and was to have a first court appearance Monday.
