Pickup truck driver charged in crash that killed Raleigh bicyclist

A Durham man has been charged in an accident that killed a 66-year-old bicyclist Tuesday morning on N.C. 98, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Russell Grant Rutledge, 33, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, according to Lt. Jeff Gordon, a Highway Patrol spokesman.

Investigators say Rutledge was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck east on N.C. 98 at about 10:30 a.m. when he struck a bicycle that was also traveling east.

The bicyclist, Eugene Howard Rotberg of Raleigh, was knocked off his bicycle and landed on the shoulder, Gordon said. Rotberg died at the scene.
