Byrd, 44, was found badly hurt at her Jarvis Street house about 7:50 a.m. that Sunday. Chou was at the house, police said.
Officers were dispatched to the house after authorities got a 911 call from there, but no information about what was wrong.
Police said Chou and Byrd knew each other before the attack, but they have not disclosed how.
The new charges brought Chou’s total bail to $450,000, and he remained at the Wake County Detention Center.
