Authorities were on the lookout Tuesday for a convicted car thief who escaped from sheriff’s deputies in Granville County on Monday.
State prison officials said Stephen Royster Hicks, 35, had been brought to Oxford from a state prison where he was serving a sentence for stealing motor vehicles in Wake and Franklin counties and for assault.
Hicks was being taken from the county courthouse to the Granville County Detention Center when he escaped, according to the state Department of Public Service. It did not disclose how Hicks got away from sheriff’s deputies.
A grand jury in Oxford had indicted Hicks last year on felony charges of fleeing to elude police, possession of stolen property and being a habitual felony.

A Wake County court convicted Hicks in November 2015 of stealing vehicles in June and July and of assault and battery in July. He also was convicted in Franklin County Nov. 30, 2015, of stealing a vehicle there in July.
After his release from state prison, Hicks will be turned over to federal authorities to serve a 15-year sentence for a 2015 armed robbery of a SunTrust bank branch in Burlington last July. Hicks pleaded guilty to that charge in March, according to federal court records.
Officials asked that anyone who sees Hicks or who knows where he might be call 911.
