Wake County investigates allegations that child was left alone on school bus

A Wake County school bus driver has been suspended with pay while the district investigates allegations that a 5-year-old boy was left alone on a bus last week.

The driver allegedly didn’t realize that the boy was still on the bus after parking it at Heritage High School in Wake Forest on Aug. 21. School officials confirmed that the driver had been driving students home from Harris Creek Elementary School in North Raleigh.

ABC-11 reported that a motorist driving by the high school saw the 5-year-old child and picked up the kindergartner before calling police.

School officials didn’t release the name of the driver but said the person was suspended while they investigate the incident. In a written statement, school officials said that drivers have been reminded that they’re expected to make sure that the vehicle is empty before parking their buses for the day.

“We take the safety of our students very seriously,” the school district said in the statement. “This should have never happened.”
