Four students on Durham charter-school bus sprayed by hot engine fluid

Four charter school students were injured Monday afternoon when a bus they were riding in sprayed a hot engine fluid on them, firefighters said.

The bus from the Institute for the Development of Young Leaders on West Club Boulevard was at Angier Avenue and Hoover Road. The driver had evacuated all the students when apparatus arrived about 5:15 p.m., Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi said.

The initial call had been for an engine fire on the bus, but firefighters determined that the engine had sprayed the liquid but had not burned, Iannuzzi said.

The four students were taken to a hospital for treatment of burns to their feet and legs, Iannuzzi said.

He said the liquid smelled like engine coolant.
