Wake Forest Baptist launches precision medicine program

Hospital starts precision medicine

A new “precision medicine” program was launched Tuesday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The program will seek to use patients’ genetic makeup to develop individualized treatment plans for cancer tumors. Wake Forest Baptist has been developing the program for a year and announced it Tuesday.

Precision medicine is considered a new frontier in an era of genomic sequencing.

The goal, say researchers, is to match each patient with the most effective treatment based on the genetic sequence of cancer cells in the patient.
