Raleigh private school cancels classes after student tests positive for COVID-19
A Wake County private school has canceled classes until further notice less than a week into the school year after a student tested positive for coronavirus.
Neuse Christian Academy in Raleigh learned Sunday night that a student had tested positive for COVID-19, a school spokeswoman said Monday. She said that all staff and families were notified after the school learned of the test result.
The school will follow protocols outlined by the Wake County Health Department for quarantining, additional cleaning and reopening, the spokeswoman said. She declined to comment on when classes, either in-person or virtually, would resume.
Neuse Christian began the school year with face-to-face classes on Wednesday. The school had 307 students last school year, according to the state’s directory of private schools.
Most of North Carolina’s public school students are set to begin the new school year next week. The majority of public school students, including those in the Wake County school system, are set to begin learning online because school leaders don’t feel it’s safe yet to return on campus for in-person instruction.
But many private schools, which aren’t bound by the same regulations as public schools, have reopened already with in-person instruction.
Thales Academy has had staff and students test positive for COVID-19 at several campuses, resulting in people being quarantined while school remains open for in-person classes.
