UNC President Tom Ross has won the 2015 Award Against Indifference at the Charlotte-based Echo Foundation.
The foundation presents the award each year to a member of the community who works “with an eye toward peace, a heart filled with compassion and a voice against indifference.”
Ross’ award was presented Thursday in Charlotte at a gala where Ben Bernanke, the former Federal Reserve chairman, was the keynote speaker.
The foundation said Ross was honored for a lifelong commitment to justice, equality, and open access to excellent education.
He has been UNC president since 2011 and was previously president of Davidson College. A former judge and director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Ross also headed the N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts. He will leave the presidency at UNC early next year.
