It’s college commencement time in the Triangle

It’s the first full weekend of May in a region with many colleges and universities. So don’t be surprised if you encounter students in caps and gowns, traffic jams around campuses and longer lines for brunch.

The Triangle’s college graduations begin with three Saturday in Raleigh – William Peace, Meredith and the day’s biggest, N.C. State.

Commencements continue Sunday with Shaw University in Raleigh and UNC in Chapel Hill.

Finally, N.C. Central, St. Augustine’s and Duke will hold their ceremonies next weekend.

Here are the details:

Saturday, May 7

N.C. State University

When: 9 a.m.

Where: PNC Arena, Raleigh.

Number of graduates: About 5,600.

Speaker: Adm. Michelle Howard, the second most senior officer in the U.S. Navy and the first African-American woman to command a Navy ship.

William Peace University

When: 10 a.m.

Where: Main Lawn on campus, Raleigh.

Number of graduates: More than 200.

Speaker: Lynn K. Erdman, chief executive officer for the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, a nonprofit organization in Washington.

Meredith College

When: 7 p.m.

Where: Dorton Arena, Raleigh.

Number of graduates: About 490.

Speaker: Ellen Stofan, NASA chief scientist and principal adviser to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

Sunday, May 8

UNC-Chapel Hill

When: 9 a.m.

Where: Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill.

Number of graduates: 6,029.

Speaker: Anne-Marie Slaughter, foreign policy expert, public commentator and author of the 2015 book “Unfinished Business.”

Shaw University

When: 10 a.m.

Where: Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh.

Number of graduates: 225.

Speaker: Fred Whitfield, Charlotte Hornets president and chief operating officer.

Saturday, May 14

N.C. Central University

When: 8 a.m.

Where: O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, Durham.

Number of graduates: About 700.

Speaker: U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, Democrat from New Jersey.

St. Augustine’s University

When: 9 a.m.

Where: University Quadrangle on campus, Raleigh.

Number of graduates: TBD.

Speaker: The Rev. Father Martini Shaw, 17th rector of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas in Philadelphia.

Sunday, May 15

Duke University

When: 9 a.m.

Where: Wallace Wade Stadium, Durham.

Number of graduates: More than 5,300.

Speaker: Mike Krzyzewski, men’s basketball head coach at Duke.
