Eight students from Johnston County have received $1,000 Ray Kroc Youth Achievement Award Scholarships, which to to McDonald’s employees.
They are Ashley Cook, Rachel Kennedy, Rachel Kimble, Sean Kimble and Kevin Smith, all of Clayton; and Jenny Bautista, Stephanie Luna and Diandra Robinson, all of Four Oaks.

“Working Smart,” a soft-skills training program, will begin July 20 at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center, 135 Bestwood Drive, Clayton. The free class will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Aug. 17.
The 27-hour course focuses on communication skills, problem-solving skills, time management and accountability. To sign up, call 919-209-2042 or stop by the Workforce Development Center.
Wake Forest Dean’s List
Four students from Clayton have been named to the spring semester Dean’s List at Wake Forest University. They Hayden Abene, Christian Green, Austin Hopkins and Taylor Outlaw.
Melanie Guerrero of Clayton has received the $2,500 Everett and Trudy Suddreth Scholarship of Excellence from the N.C. Retail Merchants Association. She plans to attend Johnston Community College.
Lafayette College graduate
Christopher Brockman of Clayton has graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Off to college
Kathleen Greer of Clayton has been accepted to Coastal Carolina University.
Lydia Johnson of Clayton has been named to the spring semester President’s List and Wake Tech Community College. To qualify, a student must earn a 4.0 grade point average.
This fall, Johnson will enter Appalachian State University, where she plans to study art education. She has received the Kabatnik Memorial Scholarship to attend Appalachian.
Woodard to attend Governor’s School
Garrett Woodard of Selma, a student at Johnston County Early College Academy, will attend Governor’s School this summer, studying natural science for five weeks.
Woodard is the son of Paul and Susan Woodard of Selma and the grandson of Bruce and Ann Woodard of Smithfield. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 77 in Smithfield.
Chowan Dean’s List
DeQuan White of Smithfield has been named to the spring semester Dean’s List at Chowan University in Murfreesboro. To qualify, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.25 to 3.79.
Dean’s List at Longwood
Jessica Anne Parker of Clayton has been named to the spring semester Dean’s List at Longwood University in Farmville, Va. To qualify, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.99.
