Wakefield High wins $100,000 grant

Wakefield High School has won $100,000 in State Farm’s Celebrate My Drive online contest.

The North Raleigh school finished in the top five in the nation, competing with more than 3,300 U.S. high schools.

The Celebrate My Drive contest encourages a school community to come together to compete for a grant while making a commitment to safe driving.

Students, parents, faculty, family and friends at Wakefield joined together in mid-October to do something great for the school and support driver safety.

The contest required school supporters to make a daily commitment to safe driving in the name of their school on a State Farm website.

Recent Wake County student traffic deaths reminded the Wakefield community of 2006, when nine Wakefield students died in traffic accidents in less than 18 months.

In response, the school created its Just Think First program, which provides safe driving messages to teens through programs and assemblies, videos and documentaries, community and other events and programs.

The grant will be used to support the Just Think First program and other Wakefield High activities.
