Hillside High senior Bakari Smith has been named February’s Duke University Durham Public Schools Student of the Month.
Bakari serves as first vice president of the Kappa Leadership Development League.
He is also a member of the National Honor Society, the student government association, the academic team and the poetry club – and maintains a 5.0 weighted GPA.
Bakari plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall. He wants to become a biomedical engineer and put his love of science to work.
“I love helping others. That’s always been a focus of mine. And I want to work in a field that combines technology, science and help others at the same time,” Bakari said in a Durham Public Schools press release.
The poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling has been an inspiration to Bakari, he said. He tries to model himself after the poem, which he says defines a man and how a man should be. Those values are ones he strives to live by each day, he said.
