Kristin Lewis of Chapel Hill won first and second place in a Fire Escape Plan competition sponsored by the American Red Cross and Project Paradigm.

Students around the country were challenged to devise fire escape plans for their families and to enter the plans in the competition.

Karen, a seventh-grader who is in homeschool, won $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place.

The Fire Escape Plan competition is part of the Paradigm Challenge, which challenges youth to come up with ideas to reduce fatalities and injuries related to house fires.
