Wake County school board Chairman Tom Benton is promoting his endorsements from elected officials and community leaders in his latest campaign mailer to voters in District 1.

In the mailer, Benton contends that “education leaders agree: Tom Benton is making a difference.” The mailer has quotes from school board candidate and former school board Chairwoman Roxie Cash, Knightdale Mayor Bob Matheny, former State Board of Education Chairman Phil Kirk, Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones and former Wake County PTA Council President Diana Bader.

Cash says Benton’s “experience as a teacher, principal and mentor has really made a difference on the Wake County School Board.”

Matheny says Benton “has stood up for Eastern Wake County.”

Kirk says Benton “has been an outstanding Chair of our Board of Education and has demonstrated strong leadership.”

Jones says Benton “is a good listener, and understands the need for Wake County Schools and our municipalities to work even closer together.”

Bader says Benton “has demonstrated the qualities which all great leaders have.”

The mailer also lists others who’ve endorsed him, including Knightdale Mayor James Roberson, Rolesville Mayor Frank Eagles, state Rep. Darren Jackson, former school board member Tom Oxholm, former state Schools Superintendent Mike Ward and former state Auditor Les Merritt.

Benton is running against Donald Agee, Mary Beth Ainsworth and Sheila Ellis in a district that includes Wake Forest, Rolesville, Wendell, Zebulon and part of Knightdale.

Benton has the biggest campaign warchest of the four District 1 candidates, allowing him to send the more expensive campaign mailers.
