A new Wake County school system group charged with developing ways to help improve the schools in Wendell and Zebulon will hold its first meeting Wednesday night.
The East Wake Education Work Group will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at East Wake High School, 5101 Rolesville Road in Wendell. The group is patterned after the Knightdale Area Education Work Group, whose efforts helped lead to the redesign of Knightdale High School and other changes in the town’s schools.
“I’m hoping it will be as successful and as invigorating as the Knightdale Working Group was – which is actually seeing some plans come to fruition,” school board Vice Chairman Tom Benton said at Tuesday’s board meeting.
Benton, who represents Wendell and Zebulon, said there’s a misconception that the new East Wake group is only focused on East Wake High, which is consolidating from four small schools back to one school. He said the group will look at all the schools in Wendell and Zebulon.

The agenda for the first meeting mirrors that of the first meeting of the Knightdale Work Group. Tonight’s topics include a review of K-12 achievement data and identification of the strengths and concerns for the schools in both towns.
