Downtown Raleigh hosts GOP Convention, high school graduations

Wake County high school graduates and their families will find themselves competing with Republican activists for parking spaces in downtown Raleigh this weekend.

A total of eight Wake County high school graduations will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Raleigh Convention Center. At the same time, the North Carolina Republican Party’s State Convention will be held Saturday at the Raleigh Convention Center and Sunday at the nearby Marriott City Center.

The graduations and the GOP Convention are expected to attract large crowds.

More than 60,000 people are expected to attend each day of graduations.

For the GOP Convention, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, Ben Carson and Donald Trump are among the featured speakers in Raleigh this weekend.

The Wake County school system has created a web page that lists general tips and information for families attending the graduations, including where to look for a downtown parking map.

For Convention Center parking, the GOP is suggesting public parking garages on Lenoir Street between Salisbury and McDowell Street; one on McDowell Street between Cabarrus and Davie Street and one on Salisbury Street between Cabarrus and Davie Street.
