Tuesday marks Todd Wirt’s last day in the Wake County school system before he becomes the new superintendent of Orange County schools.
Wirt has been Wake’s assistant superintendent for academics since 2012. His departure means that at least three North Carolina school systems will now be led by former Wake school administrators.
Terri Cobb is superintendent of Pender County schools and Stephen Gainey is superintendent of Randolph County schools.
Out of state, Donna Hargens is superintendent of Jefferson County schools in Kentucky.

At the June 16 school board meeting, school board members thanked Wirt for his service to Wake.
“The way you have poised us to be on the cutting edge of using technology in the classroom, as well as all the academic enrichment you’ve brought to this position, you will be missed,” school board Chairwoman Christine Kushner said to Wirt.
Orange County school leaders had also cited Wirt’s experience with digital learning as a reason he was hired as superintendent.
Kushner added that “we do wish you well sir as the superintendent of that neighboring (school system). We will be watching.”
