Wake County Superintendent Jim Merrill is in the running to win his third state Superintendent of the Year award and his second in North Carolina.

The eight regional finalists for 2017 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year were announced at this week’s N.C. School Superintendents Association conference. Merrill was the finalist for the state’s Central Carolina region.

The winner among the eight finalists for 2017 A. Craig Phillips Superintendent of the Year will be announced in November. The winner will represent North Carolina in the National Superintendent of the Year competition.

Merrill was crowned 2005 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year when he was leading Alamance-Burlington Schools. He was named 2013 Virginia Superintendent of the Year when he was leading Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
