N.C.-based Marine dies in Iraq

A Marine based in North Carolina was killed while overseas supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, Department of Defense officials announced Tuesday.

Lance Cpl. Curtis A. Christensen Jr., 29, of Collingswood, N.J., died of injuries suffered in a nonhostile incident Friday in Iraq's Anbar province. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) at Camp Lejeune. The incident is under investigation.

Christensen, a machine gunner, joined the Marine Corps on Oct. 16, 2006. He joined his unit in March.

His awards include the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
