Matthews soldier dies in Afghanistan

A soldier from Matthews died Wednesday in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced in a news release Friday.

Cpl. Joshua C. Blaney, 25, died at Forward Operating Base Curry, the release said. He and another soldier were in a vehicle that encountered an improvised explosive device. The soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade, Camp Ederle, Italy.
