Jailed man to be charged in Clayton robbery

Clayton police have issued warrants for a Smithfield man who they say is a suspect in a convenience store robbery Saturday in which a clerk was beaten.

According to Clayton Police Capt. J. L. Gerrell, police responded June 14 to a robbery call at the Pantry Convenience Store (Kangaroo Express) at 10081 Highway 70 W. The clerk told police that a man entered the store, requested a pack of cigarettes, then demanded money from the register. When the clerk refused to open the register, the man began hitting him, then fled the store with the cigarettes in hand. The clerk was unhurt.

Police investigating the robbery discovered a man in the Johnston County jail that matched the suspect and get-away car's descriptions.

Police plan to charge Fredrick Earl Sanders, 34, with one felony count of common law robbery and one misdemeanor count of assault.

Sanders remains in the Johnston County jail charged with larceny of a motor vehicle.
