While it might seem like the U.S. Senate race is dominating the airwaves, four state Senate candidates from Wake County have joined the TV commercial fray this month.
The candidates in Senate District 15 and District 18 – Wake’s most hotly contested legislative races – have each run commercials in October. Sen. Chad Barefoot and his Democratic challenger, Sarah Crawford, led with way with more than $100,000 spent so far.
According to local TV stations’ FCC disclosure filings, Barefoot has had the biggest media presence, spending more than $170,000 in the early weeks of October. Crawford’s campaign has spent more than $105,000.
Crawford sent out an email plea Sunday for more donations to keep her ads going. “Without another $5,000 in the next two days, our ad won’t last more than a week, and we will go cold before Election Day,” she wrote to supporters.

The District 15 race between former Raleigh mayor Tom Bradshaw and businessman John Alexander has seen smaller spending numbers.
Bradshaw has spent more than $110,000 on TV ads, while records for Alexander only show about $25,000 spent on ads.
A quick disclaimer: Dome’s rough tallies are based on records from WRAL, WTVD and WRAZ. Some of the campaigns have ads on WNCN, but the station’s FCC file doesn’t list them yet.
More detailed fundraising numbers are due to the N.C. Board of Elections by Oct. 27.
