State Superintendent June Atkinson has ascended to the presidency of the Council of Chief State School Officers.
Atkinson was named to the post at the group’s annual business meeting in California last week. She had been president-elect for the past year. As president, Atkinson leads the council’s nine-member board of directors.
The Council is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that includes elementary and secondary school leaders nationwide and from five U.S. territories.
“Throughout my career, I have valued the leadership and support the Council provides to the nation’s public school leaders,” Atkinson said in a statement. “I am honored to serve as president and look forward to contributing at such an important time in the history of public schools.”
