Looking for the perfect gift for First Lady Ann McCrory’s birthday this Sunday?
Her husband, Gov. Pat McCrory, has a suggestion for you: Donate to a local animal shelter or pet adoption nonprofit.
A news release from the governor’s office this week notes that Ann McCrory is “passionate about pet welfare and has been an ardent supporter of efforts to increase the health and safety of dogs in North Carolina.”
While the first lady has largely kept a low profile, she’s lobbied for legislation restricting puppy mills. Fellow Republicans have been less than receptive to her push, and the bill hasn’t passed.

“North Carolina’s dogs make such an impact on countless lives through new adoptions, certified emotional support for veterans and through certified service for those with disabilities,” the governor said in the news release. “To many, they are our best friends. Ann and I love Moe, and we would not have him without the Charlotte Humane Society. Thank you for helping to make my wife’s birthday special.”
