The strategist and general consultant for Gov. Pat McCrory's re-election campaign recently signed on as a senior adviser to U.S. Sen. Rand Paul's potential presidential candidacy.
That doesn't exactly put McCrory, who claims to be a centrist Republican, in the same camp as the Tea Party favorite from Kentucky. The Virginia-based strategist, Chris LaCivita, has a lot of clients.
The Wall Street Journal recently called him "the GOP's hard-charging 'commando' operative'" - as he's made a reputation rescuing floundering campaigns; last year it was Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas.
The N&O reported in October that McCrory was in discussions with LaCivita. Campaign director Billy Constangy confirmed the hire when Dome inquired this week.
