Activists will read aloud Texas Sen. Wendy Davis’ filibuster

Following a federal court ruling on Thursday allowing Texas’ restrictive abortion clinic regulations to take effect immediately, abortion-rights activists on Saturday will be reading aloud Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis’ entire filibuster speech in several cities, including in Durham.

Twenty people ranging in age from 10 to 60 will read Davis’ filibuster into a microphone at 539 Foster St. overlooking the Durham Farmer’s Market from 8:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Donations collected will go to Planned Parenthood in North Carolina.

Counterpath Press, an independent publisher based in Colorado, is coordinating similar events in Denver, Austin and New York. The company has published a manuscript of Davis’ speech.

Davis delivered a nearly 13-hour filibuster against the Texas legislation in June, which helped bring national attention on the regulations, among the toughest in the country. On Thursday, a federal appeals court ruled that most of the restrictions can take effect while a lawsuit challenging the new law proceeds.
