Former state Rep. Ronald Mason from Carteret County dies at 84

Former state Rep. Ronald Mason, who served four terms in the House in the 1970s, died Dec. 12 at the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill. He was 84.

In the mid-1990s, Mason became finance chairman for the state Republican Party. He had switched political allegiances after serving as a Democrat while he was in the House. Mason became Carteret County chairman for Robin Hayes’ gubernatorial campaign.

He served in the Air Force and was a businessman before going into politics. He was town manager of Beaufort in 1959, county manager in Carteret in 1962 and 1966, and town manager of Newport from 2002 to 2006, at which time he retired from public service.
