Clay Aiken dropped in on “The Colbert Report” on Wednesday night, continuing his string of appearances on national TV programs cashing in on the celebrity that his opponent, former state commerce secretary Keith Crisco, lacks.

Host Stephen Colbert parlayed his guest’s visit into a couple of broadsides against incumbent U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers. (“I cannot believe he’s trying to get Renee Ellmers fired,” Colbert said. “Does he not know how badly she needs her paycheck?” – a reference to Ellmers’ controversial decision not to defer her paycheck during the federal government shutdown, later changing her mind.)

Earlier in the day Aiken was interviewed on an MSNBC news program. He made several national TV appearances shortly after announcing his candidacy in February.

Aiken has made a number of fundraising trips out of state. Crisco has relied largely on North Carolina contributors, supplemented with substantial loans to his own campaign.
