The UNC system office has a new vice president for communications. Matthew Eisley, manager of strategic communication with Raleigh law firm Smith Anderson and a former News & Observer journalist, will start the UNC job Feb. 22. His annual salary will be $175,000. He succeeds Joni Worthington, who recently retired.

The hire of Eisley, who was a reporter, editor and columnist at The N&O before joining Smith Anderson seven years ago, was announced Friday by UNC President Margaret Spellings. It’s among several recent personnel changes in the UNC General Administration offices in Chapel Hill.

Several high-ranking administrators have left in recent weeks. Leslie Boney, former vice president of international, community and economic engagement, became director of the Institute for Emerging Issues at N.C. State University on Jan. 1. His annual salary is $195,000.

Charlie Perusse, former chief operating officer, became state budget director under Gov. Roy Cooper. There are no plans to immediately fill Perusse’s position, a UNC spokeswoman said.
