North Carolina Community College System President Scott Ralls is in Virginia Monday and Tuesday at public appearances as a finalist to lead Northern Virginia Community College.
Ralls is scheduled to make a public presentation and attend receptions at four of NOVA’s campuses in the suburbs around Washington.
Last week, Ralls explained that while he loves his work as head of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges, he never intended to retire in a system job.
“I feel a little bit like a field general who works at the Pentagon,” he said.

He has led the North Carolina system since 2008, where he has focused the colleges on strategies to improve student completion rates. Before that, he was president of Craven Community College, in New Bern and Havelock, for six years.
Ralls is one of three finalists for the job at NOVA, which is the second largest community college in the United States, with 75,000 students. The largest is Miami Dade College.
“I always knew I wanted to go back to a college,” he said. “This may be the time for it or it may not. We’ll have to wait and see.”
