N.C. Sen. Josh Stein, a Democrat who’s likely to run for attorney general next year, told supporters Wednesday that a conservative group’s cameraman is following him.

The fundraising email includes a photo of a young man wearing glasses and a business suit, his camera focused on Stein during a legislative meeting.

Stein’s campaign says the videographer is employed by America Rising, a conservative PAC with the stated mission of “exposing the truth about Democrats through video tracking, research, and communications. ... By cataloguing every Democrat utterance we have the data to ensure they are held accountable for their words and actions.”

The Stein email claims the PAC is “funded in part by both Karl Rove and the Koch brothers,” though a number of media reports about America Rising don’t mention them.

“Rove, the Kochs, and national Republican groups are spending their apparently unlimited resources to try to distort and smear Josh,” the campaign email says. “It’s offensive. Josh needs your help now to fight back and stand up for the people of North Carolina.

“Please contribute today to tell Karl Rove and the Koch brothers that they cannot buy elections in North Carolina!”
