The governor has ordered state flags lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday in memory of Jimmy Goins, a former Lumbee tribal chairman who died in a traffic accident on Sunday.
Goins, 66, was the only person in the single-car accident in Robeson County.
Gov. Pat McCrory issued the following statement:
“Ann and I were saddened to learn of the passing of former Lumbee Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins. After serving two tours of duty in Vietnam with the Army, Mr. Goins returned home to the Prospect Community where he became a respected and charismatic leader of the Lumbee people. As Tribal Chairman from 2004-2010, he devoted his tenure to better serving the youth and veterans of the community. He will always be remembered for his service and dedication to the Lumbee people, the state and the entire nation.”
