Gov. Scott Walker has canceled a planned campaign stop in Garner on Saturday morning.

The Wisconsin governor was going to visit Angie’s Restaurant.

His campaign said he is postponing the visit to attend the funeral of Marine Sgt. Carson Holmquist, a Wisconsin native who was one of five service members killed in the Chattanooga, Tenn., shooting.

Lt. Gov. Dan Forest was set to appear with Walker.

Walker officially launched his campaign for president about 10 days ago. The campaign said he is in the second phase of an “announcement tour” that was to include a stop in New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.

In an effort to make the state a player in the GOP presidential primary, the state Senate this week passed a bill moving the primary to March 15. Primaries had been in May. By that time the races are usually decided and North Carolina is an afterthought.

Walker, who is in his second term as governor and is consistently near the top of primary polls, said the event would be rescheduled.
