Under the Dome

Would-be Sen. Stein replacement touts fundraising

As the 2016 political dominoes continue to align, a glimpse of who has raised the most money so far is always instructive. Take the case of Jay Chaudhuri.

Raleigh lawyer Chaudhuri, who is running for state Sen. Josh Stein’s seat in the Democratic primary, reports having raised $155,000 so far. Most of that comes from individual contributors, and most of it remains cash on hand.

Chaudhuri entered the race in June after it became more likely than not that Stein, who lives in Raleigh, would run for the Democratic nomination for attorney general. Sen. Buck Newton of Wilson is the leading Republican contender so far.

The attorney general spot opens up, of course, because longtime AG Roy Cooper will likely run against Gov. Pat McCrory in the general election. Durham attorney Ken Spaulding is also running in the Democratic primary for governor.

Chaudhuri’s campaign sent out a news release this week trumpeting the contributions, which serves to warn off potential unannounced opponents from jumping into the race in the wake of his fund-raising momentum and political connections.

Chaudhuri was general counsel and policy adviser to Treasurer Janet Cowell, and special counsel to Cooper.
