The new political arm of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic kicked off a fundraiser Tuesday night in Durham with an appearance by former Texas Sen. Wendy Davis.
Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic reports that more than 180 people attended and almost $150,000 has been raised.
Davis will also speak for the organization at events in Greensboro and Charlotte on Wednesday. She gained national attention in 2013 for her marathon filibuster against an abortion bill in Texas. She later ran unsuccessfully for governor.
The organization says it is gearing up for a political fight over abortion rights and other issues.
