Former State Board of Education member charged with fraud

Former State Board of Education member Marcella Ramirez Savage is facing misdemeanor fraud charges filed by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Savage, whose tenure on the State Board overlapped with her membership on the Union County Board of Education, faced allegations in Union of “double-dipping” or filing for reimbursements from both boards for the same expenses.

Savage, who lives in Waxhaw, is charged with two counts of swearing falsely to official reports, two counts of obtaining repairs and supplies for private a vehicle, and one count of enforcement of local government finance, according to the SBI. The charges relate to activities conducted from May 10, 2013, through September 18, 2014.

Savage, 42, resigned from the State Board in late 2014, and resigned from the Union board earlier this year. She is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 25.
