Republican N.C. Congressman Walter Jones on Wednesday asked candidates running for House leadership positions to drop out if anything in their backgrounds would embarrass the party if it came out.
Jones made the plea in a letter to Republican Conference chairwoman Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington, singling out speaker candidates Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah and Rep. Daniel Webster of Florida. Jones included anyone running for majority leader and majority whip.
The letter was reported by the Brietbart website, which was linked and tweeted on Jones’ Twitter account. The Washington Examiner also published a story about it.
“Some of the most difficult times have been when our Republican leaders or potential Republican leaders must step down because of skeletons in their closets,” Jones wrote. “We’ve seen it with former Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Bob Livingston, who ran for Speaker in 1998.”
