Attorney General Roy Cooper is expected to formally announce his candidacy for governor at an event in Rocky Mount on Monday evening.
An advisory went out to news media on Friday advising of a “special announcement” at Nash Community College at 6 p.m. Plans are underway to accommodate reporters, photographers and TV satellite trucks.
Cooper, a Democrat, has long been expected to run against Republican Gov. Pat McCrory, who is up for re-election next year. The state Republican Party has been baiting him for months trying to force him to take a public stand on various issues related to his job as attorney general.
Durham attorney Ken Spaulding is also running in the Democratic primary.

Cooper has chosen Nash County for the announcement because he was born and raised there, and has longtime family ties to the region.
