Republican state Sen. John Alexander of Raleigh will face a Democrat in his bid for a second term.
Laurel Deegan-Fricke, founder and CEO of the National Coalition of Native American College Placement Services, filed to run for the Senate seat this week.
Senate District 15 stretches from the Five Points neighborhood north to Falls Lake. In 2014, Alexander narrowly beat Democrat Tom Bradshaw, a former Raleigh mayor, with 50.4 percent of the vote.
On her campaign website, Deegan-Fricke says she wants to help create jobs, improve healthcare for women and make higher education “more accessible and affordable for all walks of life and economic levels.”
