Attorney General Roy Cooper wants his campaign supporters to put Gov. Pat McCrory on Santa’s “naughty list” this year.

The leading Democrat running for governor sent out a fundraising email Tuesday calling on donations to help fill “a virtual stocking with coal” as his campaign seeks $15,000 by midnight Wednesday.

“We won't actually use it to buy coal – but we will use it to fire up this campaign and fire Governor McCrory next November,” the email from campaign manager Trey Nix says.

The N.C. Republican Party responded that the fundraising effort seems a little too Scrooge-like for the holiday season.

“Hey @RoyCooperNC ... Most people in NC would wish someone a Merry Christmas,” the party’s official account tweeted.

Dome notes that the Cooper campaign appears to be missing an opportunity to make a joke about coal ash.
