Gov. Pat McCrory has appointed a former chairman of the Mecklenburg County Republican Party to replace Josh Howard of Raleigh on the state Board of Elections. Howard resigned due to health concerns.
The new member, Grant Whitney Jr., is a Charlotte attorney who specializes in commercial real estate and property transactions. He will serve the remainder of Howard’s term, which ends May 2017.
Whitney has been a partner at Park, Poe, Adams & Bernstein since 1979. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Wake Forest University.
McCrory chose Whitney from among three names submitted by state Republican Party Chairman Hasan Harnett, as required by law.

McCrory had appointed Howard, a Republican, to the five-member board in 2013. In November, Howard said he would resign effective Jan. 1. He said he wanted to make lifestyle changes after having an extremely high cholesterol count.
