U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis is advertised as a special guest at a Jan. 22 fundraiser for state Rep. Justin Burr of Albemarle.
Burr, an Albemarle Republican, is waging a public war against House Speaker Tim Moore of Cleveland County. Burr, who is in his fourth term, is facing a primary challenger, Lane Burris.
Burr made a splash in December when he announced he would run for reelection, praising Tillis and bashing “the current Speaker” for marginalizing conservatives.
Burr made an unsuccessful run at the Speaker’s office before the 2015 session started. In speaker’s race, Burr sent a letter to the Republican House caucus members criticizing Tillis for a “top-down approach” to running the House.

“Even a tethered dog thinks he has ‘freedom’ until he reaches the end of his chain, and I want to remove the five-foot chain that has been put on our committee chairs and our caucus,” Burr wrote when he sought the speakership.
Burr could not be reached Monday.
Paul Shumaker, a senior political adviser to Tillis, said Tillis is appearing at a fundraiser for Moore, too.
Shumaker said Tillis is trying, where is schedule permits, to help those who helped him in the U.S. Senate GOP primary.
