New head of Industrial Commission chosen

Charlton Allen has been named chairman of the state Industrial Commission, where he has worked since 2014.

Allen, who lives in Iredell County, succeeds Andrew Heath, who becomes the governor’s budget director next week. Lee Roberts was the budget director until resigning to take a job in the private sector.

Gov. Pat McCrory made the announcement on Friday.

"Charlton Allen will continue the high standards of leadership and excellence of Chairman Andrew Heath at the Industrial Commission," McCrory said in a statement his office released. “I am proud to have these dedicated public servants on our team."

Allen’s appointment to the commission was approved by the General Assembly over dissent from Democrats who expressed concerns about what his critics called extreme political positions and his past actions while a conservative activist at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Allen earned a law degree from UNC and worked as a private practice attorney until his appointment.

The Industrial Commission hears workers compensation claims, along with other duties..

Allen will be paid $121,736 a year.
