Longtime North Carolia politico Bill Cobey has joined the state steering committee for Republican presidential candidate John Kasich.
Cobey is chairman of the state Board of Education and a member of the governor’s education cabinet. He was a U.S. congressman, and served in two cabinet secretary positions in former Gov. Jim Martin’s administration. In addition, Cobey was chairman of the state GOP, and ran for lieutenant governor in 1980, and governor in 2004.
“While serving in Congress with John Kasich, I was able to observe firsthand his extraordinary ability and energy to get things done,” Cobey said in a statement the committee released Wednesday. “John is a proven executive and legislative leader who will make an exceptional president.”
In the most recent polls Kasich is fourth with 6 percent of the vote, behind Donald Trump with 32.5 percent, Ted Cruz with 19.8 percent and Marco Rubio with 19.5 percent.
