After endorsing a Democrat who lost the March primary, the political wing of the State Employees Association of North Carolina is now backing Republican state treasurer candidate Dale Folwell.

SEANC had endorsed Democrat Ron Elmer over Folwell in February. Wednesday’s announcement snubs Democratic nominee Dan Blue III.

“Dale Folwell has the experience to manage our members’ retirement funds wisely,” said Tony Smith, chairman of the SEANC Employees Political Action Committee. “It concerned us when his opponent indicated he thought the current status quo of management of the retirement system was acceptable. We feel confident that Folwell will operate the office for North Carolina and not for Wall Street.”

Folwell is a former legislator who led the state Division of Employment Security until last year. He has said he wants to tackle debts in the state health and retirement system, and he said his experience with unemployment insurance will help.

He faces Blue – an attorney and former investment banker at Bear Stearns – in the November election.
