John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has endorsed U.S. Rep. George Holding in the 2nd Congressional District primary.

Bolton’s PAC contributed $5,000 to Holding’s campaign.

Holding is running for a third term in Congress against incumbent U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers of Dunn and Greg Brannon, a Cary obstetrician.

Holding and Ellmers are running for the same seat because legislators moved Holding’s district when they redrew boundaries earlier this year. She is seeking a fourth term.

“George is a staunch supporter of a strong national defense and has been a vocal opponent of President Obama’s flawed Iran Nuclear Deal,” Bolton said in a statement. “He understands that in a world where state-sponsored terrorism exists, and groups like ISIS are growing, it is more important than ever for America to expand its military capabilities and strength around the world, which is why I fully support his candidacy” in the 2nd District.

Bolton served as ambassador for about 16 months under former President George W. Bush.
