UP: STATE SALARIES: After years of lousy raises, there is finally good news for state workers -- or at least the employees of the new state lottery commission. The top 60 jobs will offer annual salaries of between $50,000 and $145,000.

UP: YOUTH MOVEMENT: Speaking of 30-year-old U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry of Cherryville last week, President Bush said he was proud to be with "a congressman who doesn't look old enough to be a congressman."

UP: THE STATE'S GAMBLING TAKE: The Easley administration is negotiating with the Cherokees to allow poker, craps, roulette and blackjack at their Smokey Mountains casino, possibly in return for the state's getting part of the take.
