A lottery player tried their luck at Cash 5 and wound up scoring a six-figure prize, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

The lucky winner, from Luverne, Alabama, hit the jackpot, winning $120,000 in the drawing Thursday, May 8, lottery officials said.

They purchased the ticket online and matched all five numbers, beating odds of 1-in-962,598 to snag the game’s top prize, according to the NC Education Lottery website. Cash 5 costs $1 per play and features a rolling jackpot that grows until someone wins it all.

The winning Cash 5 numbers drawn Thursday were 1-3-11-18-37, results show.

A lottery spokesperson said players don’t have to be residents to purchase North Carolina lottery tickets, adding that anyone can play as long as they’re in the state at the time of purchase.

“So this person must have been in North Carolina at the time and had an online account and bought the Cash 5 ticket,” the spokesperson said.

Officials didn’t say if the winner has come forward to claim their prize.

Prizes on draw games must be claimed within 180 days of the draw date, and players are encouraged to sign the back of their ticket, the lottery’s website says.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
