Techies are notoriously hard to buy for, so to provide some ideas I’ve gathered a few things I wouldn’t mind finding under my Christmas tree.
You might shake your head at a few of these, but I tried to include gifts for a variety of interests and prices.
360Fly Panoramic 360° HD video camera
What it is: A small camera that shoots 360-degree video. The round camera takes videos that you can scroll around and change the point of view.
You can also buy VR goggles ($39) to view your videos in immersive virtual reality.
I can’t even begin to imagine where this camera could be used. It’s very cool and blows away everyone who’s seen a demo.
Who it’s for: The videographer on your list who likes to stay on the cutting edge.
What it costs: $399.99.
Where to get it: Best Buy, in stores or online.
Oral-B Pro 5000 rechargeable toothbrush with Bluetooth
What it is: An electric toothbrush that connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone app.
The app features a timer and guide for better brushing, a tracker for monitoring your brushing and duration and controlling custom brushing modes. It charges from a base station and comes with a travel case.
Yes, this is the geekiest toothbrush I’ve ever seen.
Who it’s for: The anal retentive person on your list who might track his brushing frequency and duration on a spreadsheet.
What it costs: $129, but watch for it on sale.
Where to get it: Walmart, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond.
First Alert Atom smoke and fire alarm
What it is: A tiny smoke and fire detector. The Atom is about the size of a shot glass and has a nonreplaceable 10-year battery. The Atom is so small and light that you can mount it anywhere with screws, 3M Command Strips or even Velcro.
It comes in white to blend in on most walls or ceilings.
Who it’s for: Everyone needs a working smoke detector.
What it costs: $35.
Where to get it: Target stores and Amazon.
MyCharge HubPlus portable charger
What it is: An external battery pack for your small electronics. Instead of the usual USB ports to charge your phone, the HubPlus has built-in microUSB and Lightning cables. If your phone or tablet uses another type of charger, you should choose another model.
The HubPlus’ battery gets its charge from a flip-out wall plug, making it quite convenient. A 6,000 mAH battery will charge most phones twice.
Who it’s for: Anyone with a cellphone or tablet.
What it costs: $99.99.
Where to get it: Best Buy and http://shop.mycharge.com.
LuminAID PackLite 12
What it is: The LuminAID is a small inflatable solar-powered lantern. It charges its internal battery via a small solar panel. Once charged, the lantern will run for up to 12 hours on the low-light setting and will hold a charge for 1.5 years.
There are three brightness settings plus a flashing beacon for emergency locating. It collapses down to about the size of a drink coaster for storage.
Who it’s for: This is perfect for camping, hunting or just to keep in the house or car for emergencies.
What it costs: $22.95.
Where to get it: www.luminaid.com.
Jaybird X2 wireless buds
What it is: A pair of wireless earbuds that are just about the smallest Bluetooth earbuds I’ve seen.
They charge with a microUSB cable (included) and will play for eight hours on a charge. The battery is inside the earpieces, which are connected with a wire that contains a small three-button panel with playback controls. They also work with your smartphone.
Included are a silicone case, charging cable and six pairs of ear tips.
Who it’s for: Great for working out or perhaps a train commuter.
What it costs: $179.95, but much lower if you search the Internet.
Where to get it: Best Buy and Amazon.
Neet cable keeper
What it is: A 1.5-inch-diameter Spandex sleeve to contain the tangle of wires behind your TV or desk. The Keeper has a zipper on the side to make gathering the wires easy. There are 12 exit points for your cables along the 4-foot length of the Keeper. A structured wire is sewn in so you can bend the Keeper and it will hold its shape.
Who it’s for: Anyone with a bird’s nest of cables behind their TV or computer.
What it costs: $25.
